Relegation Beckons & Haven Coach Departs

17/8/2016:To all concerned. "Unfortunately the Board of Directors have decided that due to recent circumstances we are left with no option but to relieve the Head Coach of his duties, with immediate effect. We wish James all the best in the future". Signed; Amanda Hewer, GM

Nine games without a win for Haven after they lost 18-46 to Bradford Bulls who cruised to an ultimately comfortable win in this Championship Super 8 Shield opener(7/8/2016).
A devastating purple patch inside the opening quarter harvested four tries for Rohan Smith's men and put them 20-0 up.
First, Danny Addy went over and Mellor quickly added a second before further scores from Danny Williams and Matty Blythe underlined Bradford's early control. Yet once again, the defensive frailties which have undermined the Bulls all season haunted them once again as they switched off, allowing their struggling hosts to hit back with two tries.
Second-rower Ugo Perez dummied his way through the Bull's defence and centre Chris Taylor then darted over from acting half, with Louis Jouffret's two goals making it 20-12.
However, Mellor added his second on the stroke of half-time to make it 26-12 at the break before the Halifax-born product completed his treble three minutes after the restart.
Kris Welham and Kieren Moss applied further Bradford tries before Whitehaven hit back with a third score through second-rower Dave Allen.
Kurt Haggerty finished off Moss' pass for a ninth Bradford score but it was not a polished performance from the Bulls as they made over a dozen handling errors and saw their line breached three times.
With Oldham defeating the Town Haven place at the foot of the table is now looking increasingly hopeless and relegation now seems a foregone conclusion.

Sixth Defeat in a Row

This defeat was another nail in Whitehaven RLFC season as they slumped to their sixth consecutive defeat as Sheffield Eagles won 32-14 in the Kingstone Press Championship on Saturday (24/7/2016). Another game where the team failed to put in a peformance for the full 80 minutes leaves question marks not only over the teams fitness but also their ability to perform at this level.
An encouraging first hal saw the Haven lead 12-10 at the break as Chris Taylor and Grant Gore both went over for the hosts. Haven had all the play for the first 10 minutes of the Second half and should have extended their lead , but poor play and lost possession proved costly . Jordan Burns disallowed try on 66 mins was pivotal as the Eagles scored shortly afterwards to take the lead they never relinquished. Tries from Quentin Laulu-Togagae, Rob Worrincy, Steve Thorpe, Garry Lo and two from Nathan Chappell gave the Eagles a comfortable win at the Recreation Ground. Another display that sent the Haven Fans home bitterly disapponited and frusrated and one which would seem to show Haven as favourites for relegation unless they can find a massive turn round in form in the Remaining 7 Super 8 fixtures. D.F.

Haven beaten by 12 man Town

Whitehaven after this defeat today(17/7/2016) are now on the dangerously close to relegation into Championship 1 after an injury time defeat at Derwent Park. Haven will never have a better chance of getting the points in a Derby game as Town had forward Olstrum dismissed for Foul Play as early as the 8th minute. However an unispired Haven were unable to make the numerical advantage count and in the end Town just about deserved the two points .
Its was Town who led 12 nil at the half as a feeble Haven attack failed to trouble a 12 man Town defence. Haven had to do better after the interval and despite never being totally in control scored five tries through James Newton, Andy Yates, Craig Calvert, John Paul Brocklebank, Grant Gore, plus four goals to lead 28-24 as the game entered the last minute . It was then Sammutt snapped up a dropped Haven pass to put Mossop in for a try whcih he then converted on the hooter to send Haven home pointless and looking increasingly as if they will be relegted .

13/7/2016:Haven boost squad signing former Salford prop forward Carl Forster

The club is delighted to announce the signing of both Jessie Joe Parker and Dion Aiye. Jessie on a two year deal and Dion on a one year deal. The club football committee along with Gary Eilbeck and Mark Stamper have been working hard on these signings and these things take time and patience. It's a great boost for the club before going to Derwent Park on Sunday. It shows that these two players are committed not only to the club but to the town itself, they are immensely popular with the public. Lets hope the signings spur on the team for victory" Amanda Hewer G.M.

Relegation Fears

BRADFORD Bulls comprehensively thumped Whitehaven 64-18 notching up 11 tries in their biggest win of the season . For Whitehaven this lacklustre display was their sixth game without a win and with Oldham and Sheffield both winning they drop to 11th in the Championship with relegation now looking ever more likely . New signing for the Bulls, Dane Chisholm shone on his debut, as he helped his new club to the biggest win of the season with Ethan Ryan grabbing his first professional hat-trick as well.
The game was over as a contest as early as the 10th minute with the Bulls scoring three quick trys  to lead 18 nil . A hapless Haven team were poor in defence and conceded trys with alarming regularity as the Home side went in at the half leading by 56 pts to Nil . The Haven had to front  up in the second period and they actually outscored the Bulls 18 points to 8 as they ran in  three tries in 14 minutes from Jay Chapelhow, James Newton and John Paul Brocklebank ,with JP adding three conversions . However it was far too little too late as the Haven now find themselves deep in relegation trouble and badly need to win in the Cumbrian Derby next week as they travel to Workington. D.F.

Whitehaven coach James Coyle is to stand down at the end of the season

Extra work commitments with his expanding business have meant that Coyle has told the club that he does not wish to be considered for the coaching position next season. Whitehaven chairman Tommy Todd said: "James informed us of his position and we will be advertising the post, possibly as early as next week in the trade papers.

"I think there would have been a case for keeping-on James next year, bringing some continuity to the club in the coaching position. There have been some very good performances this season and I think we would have been further up the table but for the injury situation which have obviously affected us."

Coyle is in his second season as Whitehaven coach but as well as his business involvements, he and his wife became parents for the third time earlier this year so family commitments are also involved in his decision. "I think the travelling is starting to affect him as well, because he's got that on top of his work and his family. It's quite understandable. What he is determined to do is end his Whitehaven career on a high by keeping the club in the Championship," said Todd.

Featherstone Late Win

Featherstone leave it late to beat 12-man Whitehaven Three tries in the last 12 minutes earned Featherstone Rovers a 30-18 win against 12-man Whitehaven in the Kingstone Press Championship at Big Fellas Stadium.
Despite having Dave Allen sent off for dissent in the 19th minute and being disrupted by injuries, Whitehaven were in with a chance of repeating last year's shock league victory at Featherstone when they were only 14-12 behind in the closing stages. Jack Ormondroyd, Darrell Griffin and Jamie Foster sealed Rovers' win when they added to first-half tries from half-backs Kyle Briggs and Jordan Lilley, who was playing on dual registration from Leeds, while Foster kicked five goals. Anthony Walker, playing on loan from Wakefield, Jordan Burns and Jessie Joe Parker scored tries for the Cumbrians. D.F.

Whitehaven romp

Whitehaven romped to an emphatic victory in Yorkshire , ending their league campaign with a morale boosting win leading the way for the Cumbrians was Papua New Guinea international Dion Aiye scored a pair of tries as Whitehaven ended their Kingstone Press Championship regular season with a 29-0 victory at Featherstone. Rovers hopes of reaching the Middle Eight were ended last week by defeat to Sheffield Eagles coupled with a Halifax victory and further tries from Chris Taylor, Scott McAvoy and Jordan Burns ensured the Cumbrian outfit eased to victory. Louis Jouffret added four goals for Haven with Grant Gore tagging on a last-minute drop-goal.
Rovers nil Haven 29..Report and teams.
After the great win at Featherstone on Saturday there was a tinge of sadness after the game. Chairman Tom Todd and Director in charge of ground improvements Gary Eilbeck bid Louis Jouffret 'bon voyage' on his return to France. Louis and Jourdan have added a truly Gallic flair to the side this season and the fans and town warmed to the two lads' honesty and integrity. Louis' father, Christophe, traveled to see his son play and spoke with the Whitehaven directors who impressed upon him how much the club would like to see them both back next season and that we progress this French connection.

Haven builds Catalan Entente

Whitehaven RLFC recently had the pleasure of hosting Christophe Jouffret to the Club ,the chief executive of Super League Catalans Dragon and father of Havens recent French signing Louis Jouffret . He received a very warm welcome and thought the people and the town were both amazing. As a result Whitehaven are now looking to build and develope links with Christophe and the Catalan Dragons: with Louis Jouffret and Jordan Sigismeau making a big impact at the club ,these links could potentially see future player recruitment from the Catalans Feeder club UTC X111 . There have even been talks of a possible 'mini' tour to the South of France that would involve playing possibly three French clubs and a pre-season Training camp . Of course the timing of such a tour would be a little difficult but it would a tremendous boost to the club and a great opportunity for the fans to visit France on a great trip and watch rugby league. Amanda Hewer General Manager.

Aiye on Team Sheet for 2016

Whitehaven RLFC have received a massive boost confirming that PNG International Dion Aiye has signed a new contract for 2016 , Subject to Visa requirements . Half back Aiye joined the club in the close season and has played in 16 games scoring 3 trys and has established himself as a big favoutite of the Haven Fans . Football director James Robinson commented " We are working really hard to hit the ground running next season . Dion is a quality assett to the club and has setlled really wll into the local community , and its great to have him , along with others already in place for 2016.

Third-placed Sheffield tightened their grip on a crucial top-four spot with a hard-fought 26-16 victory over spirited Whitehaven in the Kingstone Press Championship.

Whitehaven, 11th in the table, trailed 16-4 at the break at Castle Park but fought back to level with two Scott McAvoy tries before touchdowns from Scott Turner and Misi Taulapapa - his second of the match - settled Eagles nerves.

Quentin Laulu-Togagae and three-goal Kyle Briggs also crossed for the South Yorkshire side while Whitehaven's other try came from Craig Calvert.

Bitter Disappointment in Second Half

It's probably too early to say this game was a relegation decider but Haven must be bitterly disppointed at losing this one as the Hawks fought back from a half time defecit to take the two valuable league points. Hunslet Hawks battle back from 12-10 down at half-time to beat Whitehaven 26-18 in their Kingstone Press Championship clash. Their five tries came from Jack Lee, James Duckworth, Mufaro Mvududu, Jimmy Watson and George Flanagan.
Richard Lepori, Rhodri Lloyd and Tyla Hepi claimed Whitehaven's tries and John Paul Brocklebank was accurate with the boot but they remain one place off the bottom.

More Bad News?

After a poor pre season, losing two games and cancelling a third game at Newcastle ,Whitehavens plans for the 2015 were thrown into further turmoil with the apparent disappearance of Head Coach Steve Deakin from the club .

It is understood that Steve Deakin left the club on Friday afternoon and drove back to his home in Oldham.

As such Deakin did not take the normal Friday night Training Session at the Recreation Ground last night and that the Saturday Morning Training Session was cancelled today for the first time since pre season got underway in November. In his absence Assistant Coaches Brett Seymour and James Coyle took control of the session .Seymour who was at the Egremont v Wath Brow cup game today , refused to comment when asked if Steve Deakin had left the club .

No official comment from the club has been made .

Easy Win for Town

Workington regained the Ike Southward Trophy (25/1/15)with an easy win over Whitehaven, scoring four tries to nil.For the second week running Haven left their loyal fans hugely disappointed with a lack lustre display
The Town team did not feature their recent Australian signing Fifita and Horton , but Haven included props Jaso Hand and Ben Davies who did not feature in last week's game at Barrow. Town kicked of with the wind at their back , Haven started brightly and more than matched the Town for the first quarter without ever really looking like scoring , however it was Town who got on the scoreboard first with a try by Stack converted by Forber to take a 6 nil Lead . After that Town grew in confidence and dominated proceedings forber added another penalty to give Town an 8 nil lead at the half . The second half however was a major disappointment as Haven fell away badly . They started to drop off too many tackles which Town took full advantage of to score through Callum Phillips , Ritson and Mossop all converted to see Town win by a comfortable margin. In possesion Haven for all their effort , rarely looked like scoring .

Following on from last weeks defeat at Horror Show at Barrow , Haven once again were found lacking in all departments . In two games they have conceded 68 points and have scored only one try . Not the start that was anticipated , and Coach Steve Deakin and the player must now find a massive improvement in their performance for next weeknds trip to take on a resurgent Newcastle Thunder otherwise their pre-season record will show played 3 lost 3 ! Haven: Lepori, Wilde, Bannister, Holliday, Burns; Seymour, Aiye, Robinson, Newton, Hand, Allen, McAvoy, Brocklebank Subs: Hepi, T Coyle, Davies, Horner

Investment in Recreation Ground Approved
Gary Eilbeck Director for Ground Improvements at Whitehaven RLFC said we are delighted to announce that work can commence on improvement's to the Recreation Ground after securing funding from Energy Coast West Cumbria Ltd (trading as Britain’s Energy Coast) who agreed several years ago to hold funds approved by BNFL for much needed improvements to the Whitehaven Rugby League stadium. This was before the Pow Beck initiative. The unspent funds have remained available for the club for when it was able to demonstrate a viable investment proposal to ensure the stadium retains its ability to host Championship level games. WRLFC have now satisfied Sellafield Ltd and the BEC board that the funds should be released for such a proposal. BEC officials are working with the club on a programme of investments over the coming months which will satisfy the Rugby Football League and will guarantee the town can host Championship rugby next season and beyond.. This move honours an early agreement and is not a part of BEC’s forward plan for investments into the local economy. Work has commenced on refurbishing the Kells end and also creating a new home changing room under the Grandstand and to refurbish the current changing rooms into one for away teams use . Further work will be undertaken during 2015 to meet the RFL requirements on number of seats required in the Championship and also upgrading the floodlights. The club had agreed to play our Annual friendly against Gateshead at home on the 1st February 2015 however due to the renovations this game will be played at Kingston Park home of Newcastle Falcons Rugby Union on Saturday the 31st January 2015 with a 3pm kick off.

Jordan Hand agrees season-long loan with Whitehaven

St Helens prop Hand is returning to The Recre on a season-long loan after spending the 2014 season as a dual-registration player. The 21-year-old made 20 appearances for Whitehaven last season, scoring two tries. Whitehaven boss Steve Deakin has labelled the return of loan star Jordan Hand as a ‘massive endorsement’ for the work the club is doing. “He has enough talent to be offered a new deal by St Helens and the fact that they are also prepared to loan him out to us endorses their faith in what we are doing up here,I’m absolutely delighted to get a prominent, up-and-coming prop as part of our side" Deakin said.

Ready for the Off

Workington Town and Whitehaven will kick-start the inaugural Summer Bash for the Kingston Press Championship t Blackpool. Tickets for the Blackpool week-end, held over the spring Bank Holiday in May, have now gone on sale. Town's clash with neighbours Whitehaven is one of four matches on Saturday, May 23, including the first ever final of the League One Cup, while there will be three more Championship games on the following day. More information...

Whitehaven have appointed former Catalan Dragons reserve boss Steve Deakin as head coach on a two-year deal. More

Whitehaven stay up

Whitehaven started this game knowing that a win was a must, and that anything less would mean relegation. In the end they romped to an emphatic win over the Lions , but even then they had to rely on Keighley's by Featherstone to secure their Kingstone Press Championship status with a 44-18 win at Swinton. Scott McAvoy, Carl Foster, Jordan Burns, Jesse Joe Parker, Cain Southernwood, Lee Mitchell and James Newton scored tries for the Cumbrians and Australian half-back Brett Seymour kicked eight goals.

Tries from Martin Ainscough, Kevin Penny and Richie Hawkyard could not prevent Swinton ending the season with a 10th straight defeat. So it will be Championship rugby next season for the Haven and a fresh set of challenges, but for the moment Haven can savour this final day win in front of over 250 ecstatic travelling fans.
