Gregg's a Massive Help on the field and off...
WHITEHAVEN are launching a new pink kit - which they'll wear during their next big game on Sky TV.
The launch takes place this evening(May26) at The Recreation Ground, from 5.30pm.

Regular viewers of Sky's Championship coverage will have seen Haven's teenage scrum-half Gregg McNally's unusual celebration of his scores against Widnes in their last Sky game. As the Sky reporters at the game explained - Gregg was dedicating the scores to his grandfather, who sadly passed away after being treated for cancer at The West Cumberland Hospital.

And now the club is helping Gregg raise funds and awareness for the hospital's Henderson Suite, by playing in a pink kit. The shirts will be worn in the Cumbrian derby against Barrow at The Recreation Ground on July 16, before being auctioned off. All the money from the auction, and from a bucket collection on the night, will be donated to the hospital. Gregg said: "I hope people can donate as much as they are able to, in order to make the ward as comfortable as possible for people who go there for treatment. Recently, my granddad was treated at the hospital and the staff did a great job of looking after him, as I'm sure they do with everyone.

"It brings it home when it's your own family - but they do that work all year, and it could be your granddad or father or child, that's why I think it is important to help the ward improve the facilities. Our fans are great and I'm sure the appeal will get a lot of support."

The idea came from Unique Sport's owner Billy Rudd, who supplies Haven's kit and who has also had family and friends treated at the ward. This seasons shirt sponsors, including Eilbeck's motors, SEL and Nuclear Management Partners, have volunteered to pay extra to the charity to have their names on the new shirts for the match.

The replica shirts will also be on sale at Unique Sports, in Whitehaven - with all profits going to the ward.

Haven stars of Future beat Wigan

Greg McNally collected a personal haul of 16 points as Whitehaven just edged Wigan outfit Deanery in the Boys' Year Eleven North West Counties Final of the Carnegie Champion Schools Tournament. But it was a tremendous late defensive rally that clinched the victory for the Cumbrians as Deanery desperately searched for a winning score
inside a frantic final ten minutes. Whitehaven withstood raid after raid and showed superb spirit to battle their way to victory. Deanery centre Liam Taylor had fired his side ahead after just three minutes with a pacy burst down the left touchline before wrong-footing
Whitehaven full-back Karl Olstrum to cross under the sticks. But the Cumbrians kept their composure and soon hit back. First McNally's clever chip was hacked forward by Sean Fitzsimons before being gathered by the second-row over the line, then McNally himself crossed with a dart from dummy-half. Quick tries from Liam Waterworth and Steven Wright restored Deanery's lead by the half-time break as they held a slender 16-12 advantage. However, Adam Ramsden's double quickly followed the restart and Whitehaven had regained control.
Jordan Boon showed great awareness with a quickly-taken tap penalty near the Whitehaven line to level the scores at 22-22. But McNally's second and his subsequent conversion proved just enough, with Scott Leatherbarrow's missed conversion to Tom Clark's late
effort proving crucial.

Haven joins Save Hospital March

Whitehaven chairman Des Byrne and the squad joined the 3,000 marchers at a Whitehaven News Save our Hospital Services march on Saturday December 9 2006.

On the day Haven beat visting Leigh (June 2006) Charles Maudling won £10,000 in the club's annual Big Prize draw.

WHITEHAVEN have appointed the club’s first full-time development officer Alan Davidson on a three-year contract . Davidson, a former Haven hooker and Kells and Maryport coach in the Cumberland League, has switched from a job with Allerdale Council where he was the borough’s RL development officer. Davidson will be responsible for Haven’s extensive schools and community projects, as well as developing pre and post-match entertainment at the Recreation Ground.

Haven targeted 24 primary schools in Copeland for visits this year, with almost 1,000 youngsters undergoing rugby training, spearheaded by Aussie scrum-half Joel Penny before his end-of-season switch to Halifax. And the additional funding, from SportsMatch and club sponsors B & H Motors and Washington International will allow Haven to expand the scheme in the new year. "We are looking intially to make one full-time with hopefully two part-time appointments to help us deliver the next stage of the community programme," said Haven Director, Dave Farrell. "The benefit of the schools work is self-evident and we can now push forward with additional people, making the programme bigger and better in 2006. "We've done some really good work in the schools. It keeps the profile of the club high with young people. They are our future and we have to invest in them. The work we are doing is reflected in the age profile at our home games." Haven recorded a rise in home attendances for a fifth consecutive season in
2005, with their Recre average topping 2,100 last term. In one major scheme, Haven players targeted schools in outlying areas, including Seascale, Gosforth, Beckermet, Lamplugh and Ennerdale. "These are relatively small schools that don't get that much of a chance to get involved in sport - and they embraced it," Farrell added. "We were also involved in the British Nuclear Group's Science Week, with coaches Steve McCormack and Peter Smith putting together a really good package at the Recreation Ground, showing the benefits of exercise.

LHF Healthplan voted Bradley Halcrow (7), from Kells as the most dedicated supporter, with his tale of fanatical devotion. Bradley attends every match, he is the team mascot and goes to every team training session to encourage the players through hail, rain or snow. As part of his prize, Peter and the “Most Dedicated Fans” from the other National League One and Two sides were introduced on the pitch at the weekend to the crowd at the LHF Healthplan National League Grand Final at The Halton Stadium, Widnes and will each receive an exclusive signed shirt and ball for their beloved team.

In 2005 WHITEHAVEN have landed a £50,000 jackpot to develop the club’s community work over the next 12 months. The award was made possible through a combined donation of £25,000 from loyal Haven backers Washington Group International and B&H Motors, with the government’s Sportsmatch scheme adding the same sum. The cash will enable the club to visit every primary school in Copeland over the next year to spread the RL gospel. Haven secretary Dave Farrell praised Thompson and player performance boss Gary Hewer for their work in developing the successful Sportsmatch bid, which required matching funding from the club to be successful.

Coach Steve MacCormack has confrimed that Haven are to start the junior Under 18 Academy side in the coming 2005 season.

WHITEHAVEN'S scholarship scheme doing better than ever. Dozens of the club’s youngsters were selected for county action.

Around 30 Haven scholarship kids have been picked to represent Cumbria at under-13, under-14 and under-15 level in a ‘regional carnival’ at St Helens in September, with the likes of Lancashire, Yorkshire, London and the South and Wales all taking part.

With the advantage of a strong wind Haven established a 12 point lead in the first quarter with tries through winger Keith Campbell and full back Scott Kenmare plus goals from Gary Smith and Tony Gregg.
After that eased off and allowed Town to score three converted tries so that by half time they led by 18-12 pts
Another town six pointer just after the restart could have opened the floodgates but our lads dug deep came back into the game Fine breaks from Dexter Miller and Scott Lofthouse set up god attacking positions as we scored two further tries from centre Ben Prince and Stuart Pickering to make the final score 31-20

WHITEHAVEN newly revived Academy team scored their first win of the season when they beat Keighley 48-10 at The Recreation Ground on Sunday.(May 19 2002)
Winger David Whitworth notched up a hat-trick of tries, with Matt Whalley and Ryan Robb adding two each and Dean Burgess one. Robb also landed eight goals.
First team stand byes Ryan Campbell, Darren King, Dean Burgess and Egremont's John Lebbon all featured in the Haven side. As the first team rests up for the big derby, the Academy are also visiting Town Academy on Saturday, 1pm kick-off at Derwent Park
