Sept 5 2004
Leigh Centurions 21 (18-8) 14 Whitehaven

HAVEN lost this important away game but they have the ability to upset the Centurions in the play-offs in three weeks time.

Leigh, without injured playmaker Tommy Martyn, made the most of their limited chances while Haven failed to grasp their opportunities in the close and clammy conditions.

Notable throughout were Gary Broadbent, scrum-half Sam Obst, Props Ryan Tandy and David Fatialofa and Big Paul Davidson.

Leigh scored first after three minutes, Neil Turley booting a penalty after an Aaron Lester high shot. Two minutes later, Leigh were in again, a chip over the top leaving the Haven defence stalled and Dave Alstead crossed out wide.

But Fatialofa responded by diving through under the posts, virtually unopposed, Nanyn adding the conversion.

Haven took the lead on 15 minutes, Nanyn slotting a penalty.

Turley made a huge breakthrough from his own try line before passing for Alstead who crossed for his second try.

Turley's conversion gave the hosts a 10-point lead. Obst with a high kick gave Seeds the chance to make a try, only to see it disallowed .

Haven kept up attacks as the second half opened, but that man Turley again scored with a drop goal.

Tandy, Broadbent and Obst combined in winning fashion for a deserved try Nanyn converting.

Haven continued to press, with Haven exploiting winger Craig Calvert's pace on one close shave. With only seconds remaining, Obst's quick feet created another chance, but his pass to Sice hit the sub's shoulder and Leigh again survived.
