Calvert speed beater
Halifax 14 -34 Whitehaven
August 12 2004

Shay Stadium saw Haven walk through the Halifax defences in a first half to be proud of. Tries cam from Howard Hill, Sam Obst and Mick Nanyn . Much talk of Super League beckoning as Leigh seem the only big hurdle to tackle. Speedy winger Craig Calvert played a vital role in creating some of the first half momentum.

Rikki Sheriffe did touch dopwn for the home side and at one stage it was level pegging but not for long and things got even better for the visitors straight from the restart. Sam Obst lived up to his reputation as the division's best half-back, pouncing on his own kick through to score. Nanyn converted to leave Haven handily placed at 16-4 but even then they were not finished, Nanyn scoring.

The centre tapped over the conversion to leave Haven dominating at 22-4. Halifax rallied with a try for former Widnes man Phil Cantillon. After the turn round things briefly slipped as James Bunyan ploughed over in the corner.

But then Hill stretched out to touch down and secure the two crucial league points. Calvert's capped it all with a second try in injury time.
