Whitehaven had been winning at half-time but Rochdale stormed back and laid down seven tries.

Local lad Jon Roper, who had seen a spell at Haven was among those touching down for the Hornets.

The best try of the game came from Whitehaven's two-try Paul O'Neil, who ran from inside his own half for a solo touchdown in the first period.

Gary Broadbent, drafted in at full-back, and Aaron Lester also crossed. Steve Kirkbride kicked four goals, proving a steadier kicker than Holt.

Leroy Joe emerged suffered a cut head for which he received stitches but returned to play in the second half.
