Rochdale result secures Top
Slot
Sept 11 2005
The wait is over .....salute Steve McCormack and his team.
Whitehaven Rugby League have clinched the LHF National League
leaders' trophy.
Haven, beaten by Leigh
in extra time in last year's Grand Final to
agonisingly miss out on a place in Super League, secured top
spot with a 44-20 victory at Rochdale to earn home advantage
against Castleford in the qualifying semi-final on Sunday, September
25.
Victory at the Recreation Ground will take Whitehaven through
to the October 9 Grand Final at Widnes and give them another
chance of reaching the top flight.
With a massive travelling
support behind the Cumbrian dominated the game form the early
stages. A hat-trick of tries from scrum-half Joel Penny was the
highlight of the victory at Spotland, where the foundations were
laid by an impressive first-half display by their forwards.
Tries from Penny (2),
Carl Sice, Mick Nanyn and Craig Calvert enabled them to build
a 30-8 interval lead and. Hornets drew first blood in the second
half
with David Alstead finishing off a fine move with a try giving
the Havan fans
a few anxious moments midway throught the second period . However
it was the Cumbrians who finished off the stronger addding further
scores through David Fatialofa and Penny.
A great performance
from the Haven just when it was required to see the team through
to a historic victory . All 17 were simply brilliant when it
mattered though genral concensus would give Joel Penny the man
of the match award .
