Back to the Top ! August 14 2005   Whitehaven opened up a two-point lead at the top of LHF Healthplan National League One with a thrilling victory over title rivals Castleford. The game certainly lived up to its pre-game billing and all credit to both teams for serving up a truly memorable game played in sweltering heat . The Haven almost threw away an 18-0 half-time lead but eventually finished 19-16 winners. Defeat for Castleford means their rocky run continues. Having looked unbeatable earlier in the season, three losses in four matches have undermined their push for top spot. In the latest, a Carl Rudd drop goal with the score at 18-12 proved the safeguard Whitehaven needed to stay top of the table - they had led Castleford on points difference going into the match. Whitehaven scored three first-half tries through Carl Sice, Joel Penny, who ran more than half the length of the pitch, and David Seeds, with Mick Nanyn landing three goals, including a penalty. Wayne Price got two of Castleford's three second-half tries and Andy Kain the other, with Craig Huby converting two of them. The Haven man of the match awards went to Aussie tandem of Ryan Tandy and Joel Penny though as Steve McCormack said afterwards it takes more than two players playing well to beat a side of Castlefords calibre .Indeed Haven had 17 heroes out there and thoroughly deserved the win though it was very close at the end .
