Popular Parks warden
Sculpted at the Beacon
The
people of Copeland were asked to vote for which local character they would like
to see sculpted in bronze. And they voted for Michael Little, busy park keeper
helping keep SAt Nicholas Gardens in tip top condition.
The sculpture by portrait sculptor Paul Bainbridge was commissioned by The Beacon
as a museum artefact to be added to its collection.Park Warden for Copeland
Borough Council for over 42 years. Michael received nominations from throughout
the borough.
On Saturday 11 April, Michael sat in the Harbour Gallery at the Beacon, watched
by a crowd of onlookers while sculptor Paul Bainbridge created his portrait
in clay. The clay mould was then taken back to Hertfordshire where Paul has
his workshop. Paul completed the mould before the sculpture was finally cast
in bronze. On 17th July 2009 Paul delivered the sculpture to The Beacon where
it is being kept tightly underwraps until its official unveiling on Friday
21st August at 3pm. The sculpture will be unveiled to invited guests and press
only and will be available to be viewed by the public from 10 am on Saturday
22nd August.
Charlotte Stead, Curator at The Beacon said We are delighted to receive
Paul Bainbridges sculpture of Michael Little. The sculpture will be a
welcome addition to the museum collection. This work is a historical record
of Michael Little, who is a well known Copeland character and will be enjoyed
for generations to come.
When asked about the unveiling of the sculpture, Michael said I am really
looking forward to it. I want to say Thank You very much to everyone involved
After the official unveiling the sculpture will be on public display at The
Beacon during the museums normal opening hours, Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 4.30pm
and also Mondays during the school holidays.
