In the autumn of 2009 the "Beacon Gallery" showed a collection of pictures taken from the museum's Fine Art Collection, focussing on Cumbrian places. Below is Mathias Read's view of the town that is part of the collection.

The exhibition gives the public an opportunity to view items from The Beacon's vast collection of Fine Art, including Matthias Read's oil on canvas painting, "View of Whitehaven Harbour from Mount Pleasant" c1710. The exhibition features not only breathtaking landscapes of the region such as Buttermere and St Bees, but also historic and modern views of towns including Egremont and Cleator Moor. The works included cover eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century views. As well as Matthias Read, other artists featured include Frank Waddington, Steve Ward, Emily Redfern, Frederick T. Sibley, Colin Allen, I.B. Hutchinson, G.W. Hobbs, William Mitchell and Robert Bell Gunning.

The "An Artist's View - Cumbrian Scenes" exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday and Holiday Mondays 10am to 4.30pm and will be on display for the next four months.
