Howman cottage is perfectly placed for a holiday exploring the quieter western Lakes such as Wasdale and Eskdale. The cottage is also close to the small seaside resort of St Bees.
St Bees village enjoys both a small intimate beach and foreshore and the rural charm of a village on the western fringes of the English Lake District. The clifftop walks of St Bees Head afford views across to the Isle of Man and provide nesting for many rare breeds including rare sighting of colourful Puffins. The village is also on the start points for the Coast to Coast footpath made famous by Wainwright.
It has a rich history centred
on the Norman church that was formerly a Priory before Henry the
Eighth's split with Rome.
The priory church features a massive organ by the famous 'Father'
Henry Willis. Meanwhile, St. Bees School, founded in 1583, has
grown down the years into a major public school that boast many
well know ex-St Beghians including comedian Rowan Atkinson.
The village has a station on the coastal rail line to Carlisle
and Barrow. It is within a short drive of some of the most dramatic
Lakeland valleys of Wasdale, Ennerdale and Eskdale. The village
has a small golf course and there are other courses at Whitehaven
and Workington.
