The delightfully refurbished rooms are spacious and well-equipped with full en-suite shower or bathrooms and many extras in all rooms. The original Victorian features have been lovingly restored throughout.
Glenfield holds a full Resident's license and offers restaurant style evening meals selected from a menu that is designed to offer the best of home-cooked food including vegetarian, children's options and home-baked bread. Many guests return to enjoy Margaret's breakfasts that have earned an enviable reputation for quantity and quality. All food is prepared from the best available produce, sourced locally whenever possible, and the meat, which is supplied by a local butcher (www.wilshambling.co.uk ), attracts particularly favourable comments.
On chilly winter evenings guests can relax in front of the open fire in the comfortable Resident's lounge and enjoy a drink, read a book or watch TV at any time. Outdoor seating is provided on the garden terrace.
Glenfield is situated within a 10 minutes walk from Whitehaven's town centre and dramatic harbour giving guests the opportunity to enjoy the very best of Western Lakeland ( www.western-lakedistrict.co.uk ) together with the evening facilities available in the town ( www.whitehaven.org.uk ) with its pubs, clubs and restaurants. Unrestricted, on-street parking is available immediately opposite the Guest House.
Glenfield is very convenient for the start of the Sea to Sea long distance cycle route from Whitehaven to Newcastle or Sunderland (www.c2c-guide.co.uk ). Secure, indoor cycle storage is available. The facilities have earned a Visit Britain "Cyclist Friendly" award and Andrew will be able to share his own recent C2C cycle ride experience. Staying at Glenfield is also an ideal opportunity to enjoy luxurious Guest House accommodation in preparation to starting Wainwright's coast to coast walk from St Bees (a few minutes train or bus journey away) to Robin Hood's Bay. Here again, Visit Britain have recognised Glenfield's facilities with the "Walkers Friendly" award and Andrew will be able to share his experiences after also completing the second most popular walk in the world.
Whitehaven will not be thought of as an obvious base to explore the Lake District National Park but Glenfield offers the best of all worlds. You can choose to forget the car and take a five minute walk to Corkickle Station, travel on the Cumbrian Coast Line to Ravenglass and, having bought a combined ticket on the train, transfer to the superb Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge steam railway (La'al Ratty - www.ravenglass-railway.co.uk) to journey into the unspoilt heart of western Lakeland with walks ranging from gentle strolls in the sylvan Eskdale valley to some of the best approaches to the Scafell massif. Alternatively, spend a day exploring the haunted castle, world owl centre and Sino-Himalayan gardens at Muncaster ( www.muncaster.co.uk ) or the impressive remains of Hard Knott Roman fort.
ButtermereIf you are worried about the weather good local forecasts are available (BBC Radio Cumbria for the Whitehaven area) but, remember, if you are planning a walk on the fells you should obtain a dedicated forecast (We recommend the National Park weather line on 01768 775757).
Short car journeys will take you to the spectacular Wasdale valley with England's highest mountains, deepest lake and smallest church ( www.wasdaleweb.co.uk ) or to nearby Ennerdale to experience perfect Lakeland scenery away from the crowds that frequent the tourist honey pots of the Eastern Fells. No outdoor experience is better than enjoying winter walking in England's finest mountain scenery combined with the excellent evening facilities available at Glenfield.
