Hauled over the Coals for slip of the Tongue
A
Socialist all his life and no great enthusiast for New Labour Ronnie Calvin
was in 2009 de-selected as county councillor for Hensingham following a
report to the council's Committee on Standards. It was six months ago that Ronnie fell foul of the politically correct brigade. He told us how he had been at the Kendal offices of the county council. My back was giving me agony...I have fused vertebrae since working down the pits. When someone asked why I was suffering I blurted out; 'Cos I worked like a Nigger down the pit'. But I hadn't noticed that a coloured person had come into the room behind me. As soon as I was pulled up on my remark I tried to find the chap and apologise. But he had gone somewhere else and he hadn't made any complaint...someone else did that. There was no malice it was just a stupid saying that slipped out. Ronnie (aged 74) started working down the coal mines straight from school. He had to work down the very colliery,William Pit, where his own father had been killed in 1947. Ronnie was among those who campaigned long and hard for a William Pit memorial garden. He then worked down the Harrington no 10, and Ron jokes now about the fact that he and his mates only got seven shillings and nine pence for each tonne they hewed while Ray and the others got £1 a tonne working at Harrington no 11. After the Lowca work he was for 18 years a pit deputy at Haig pit. For 17 years Ronnie was also a retained fireman. I'm not a racist in any way..but the Labour lot have branded me as one. I have campaigned on behalf of the overseas nurses and doctors at Hensingham. Ronnie has apologised personally to those who nominated him for councillor in the past in case the issue caused them any embarrassment. |
