Derwent woes

By Marra
Date: 4/1/2001

The pain continues for both coach Cullen and the Haven fans. Haven gave of their all but a vocal home crowd soon sensed they had the upper hand. But Haven never quit. Marc Jackson was fielded mid way through the second half, should he have been on sooner?

Town 31 - 10 (20-4) Whitehaven

It could have been so different. Haven got to within a foot of the Town line in the first five minutes.
But errors let the game slip away. Both Aaron Lester, who was red carded made one error that let in a Town try and then Wes Wilson dropped a catch under the sticks to see Town snatch a try.
But Haven never gave up and repeatedly held the line. Seeds, Walsh and Hill all had a promising runs at Town but the only try was a consolation effort from Jonathan Wignall in the dying minutes.
A Kells lad, Steve Kirkbride, who came along from Warrington at no 7, had possibly the best touches and kicked all the goals and conversion. Marc Jackson got a chance in the second half and helped stop Haven's heads drop down too low.
Sadly there are still delays in clearing Leroy Joe from the quota situation.
